Cave history

History books may say that Colorado’s Cave of the Winds was discovered in 1880, but the cave itself is millions of years old. Long before that, the Jicarilla Apaches told stories of a sacred cave near Manitou Springs—home to the Great Spirit of the Wind.

When two young brothers named George and John Pickett went exploring in the Williams Canyon area, they discovered the cave entrance, what we now know as Cave of the Winds.

What to expect & FAQs

"Great Activity for the Family!” This was so fun! We did the cave tour and the wind walker/zip line attraction. Our tour guide was fun and informative, and seeing the inside of a cave was a cool experience!

Discovery Tour: Wear comfortable clothing. Make sure your shoes have good traction – sneakers or hiking boots are ideal. Visitors should bring a light jacket – even in the heat of a Colorado summer, the cave temperature is a pleasant 54 degrees.

Haunted Lantern Tour: Bending down and shuffling your feet is required, so wearing athletic shoes is highly recommended. Please keep in mind your shoes may get muddy while on this tour.

Expedition Tour: Crawling through muddy passages will be required, so wear comfortable clothing and closed toe shoes that you won’t mind getting muddy and possibly ruined. Long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and gloves are required. Make sure your shoes have good traction – sneakers or hiking boots are ideal. Kneepads are optional. We provide all other caving equipment you might need.

Front baby carriers are permitted. Our caves have narrow, short passageways with over 200 stairs, so strollers and baby backpacks are not allowed.

As much as we love pets, Cave of the Winds Mountain Park is a no-paws zone—so they will have to sit this one out. Leashed or not, pets aren’t allowed inside the park. Thanks for understanding! 🐾

The cave itself is not wheelchair-accessible because of its narrow passageways and stairs. We can give you a complimentary visit into the Canopy Hall, the first room in the Cave, which highlights beautiful formations. Wheelchair access is available in the Josephine Snider Nature Center, Pavilion, Canyon Rim Grill, Gift Shop, and restrooms.

Yes! For large groups looking to explore the cave system, we do offer group tour rates. Get more information on group tours here

As fun as that sounds, we don’t offer self-guided tours—our caves have a lot of twists, turns, and secrets. Stick with our awesome tour guides —they know all the cool spots and how to get you back out!

We recommend booking online in advance—especially for the Haunted Lantern and Expedition Tours, which can fill up quickly! But if you’re feeling spontaneous, we do accept walk-ups when space is available.

It depends on the tour!

  • Discovery Tour: All ages welcome (kids 3 and under are free).
  • Haunted Lantern Tour: Ages 8+ only.
  • Expedition Tour: Ages 13+ only. Be sure to check age requirements when booking!
